Use these lessons to help students discover pi and other intriguing and applicable aspects of mathematics while still having fun!

Be an Irrational Number Liberator and Prove That Pi Equals 3
Buffon's Approximation - An intriguing and novel way to calculate pi with a board and a pin... Show them that math is literally everywhere they look.
Pi Chain or Necklace - Teach students what "randomness" looks like while creating decorations for the room.
The 100,000-sided polygon - How many sides does a circle have? Use this curious question to develop a fun activity for calculating pi and relating a circle to a polygon of infinite sides.
Mathematician's Duel - En garde! Nothing like a duel between two skilled mathematicians to spice up the day. Add excitement to Pi Day through this competitive game.

Gear, Memorabilia, and Prizes

Depending on how you celebrate pi day, there are a number of different places that you can go to find shirts, clocks, mugs, etc. to wear/use for yourself, your math department, or whatever. Plenty of teachers like getting the t-shirts as prizes as we offer a discount prize of bulk student orders. Please visit our Pi Day Bulk Orders page or anywhere in the rest of our store to "wear Pi Day on your sleeve". :)

The Science Teecher - This fellow is much like myself with a number of t-shirts and gifts designed with a math theme.
Proud Nerd - Another site with many math and science t-shirts
ThinkGeek - ThinkGeek is better for computer stuff, but they have some good math t-shirts there.
MathImage - These are t-shirts with nifty theorems and graphs on them. They are intriguing as opposed to funny.
Mathematicians Pictures - One of my favorite sites--it has both funny and intriguing math gear and prizes.

It's amazing how entertaining pi can be, and how creative some people have gotten over the years. Here are some nifty websites that captivated me for hours, whether Pi Day or not:

The Pi Search Page - Search for any string of digits in pi, up to a 120-digit number!
The Pi Name Search Page - Ever considered converting pi to base 27 (see the Alphabetic Pi t-shirt)? Search for your name in pi on this website.
The Pi Code - Read a very interesting article on base 26 pi and the ensuing probabilities.
